As of May 3, 2009, eighteen countries (18) have officially reported 898 cases of influenza A (H1N1) infection.
The affected countries are: Mexico , United States , Austria , Canada , Hong Kong , Costa Rica , Denmark , France ,
Germany, Ireland , Italy , Netherlands , New Zealand , Korea , Spain , Switzerland and United Kingdom .
World Health Organization (WHO) advises no restriction of regular travel or closure of borders. People who are
ill should delay international travel and people who are developing symptoms following international travel
should seek medical attention.
Upon arrival from a country where confirmed cases have been reported, the following precautions should be
observed:
- If feeling ill within 48 to 72 hours upon arrival, immediately inform your physician about the signs and symptoms (fever, coughing, sneezing, sore throat, body aches, nausea and diarrhea) you are experiencing. Provide information to physician of previous travel within the past two weeks. Quarantine yourself from your family.
- Sick persons should observe personal hygiene at all times. Wash hands properly.
- Ask immediate members of the family to also consult with the physician.
- Eat nutritious food. Avoid smoking and alcohol intake.
- Avoid ill people. Wear masks if you have to meet with people in hospitals.
- Do not self-medicate. The use of antivirals should be made under the guidance of a physician. Self-medication can make one develop resistance later on when the need to take antivirals is necessary. For the use of antivirals in the treatment of Influenza A (H1N1), the clinicians have to make decisions based on the clinical epidemiological assessment and harms and benefit of the treatment of the patient.
